SS25 SWAIA Native Fashion Week
“Sutai Classics” touched upon the materials common to the foundational designs of House of Sutai ; Pearls, Dentalium shells, Chain and Gold accents for the clothing designs and accessories. Inspired to continue queer storytelling through the runway, Bread pushed the boundary by moving into the next decade and bringing light to the Ballroom scene in the 80’s and Afro Indigenous Models. With bold patterns and complex body chains the pieces told stories through models’ movement.
This year, Bread opened the show with Paris Ballroom scene’s Legendary Mother Lara Laquiz who is the first Indigenous person to be “Legendary” in the ballroom scene worldwide. Lara’s expertise and energy quickly transferred to the models and audience leaving everyone wanting to learn more about voguing and ballroom. Bringing Lara to Santa Fe was crucial to the Native queer community. Why? Because for the first time the ballroom scene has an indigenous woman in the category of “Face” meaning the world now sees her indigenous features as a standard.
House of Sutai prides itself on sharing a platform and collaborating with Native brands and Afro Indigenous Artists. For this season House of Sutai had custom Nail Sets by Stoner Baby Nails, Special designed Makeup looks executed by the Prados Beauty team, Hair from Daphne Coriz, Nani’s Braidz, Kristin Jim and Photography by world known photographer Louie Perea. A special voguing mix was made just. for House of Sutai by LA Based Composer Lore The World and is available on Spotify and Apple Music.
